What is Ludomania and Where to Find Help?

On December 2, 2025, a preventive event in the format of a lecture titled “What is Ludomania and Where to Find Help?” was held at the Kostanay Polytechnic Higher College (KGKP).

The main goal of the lecture was to increase student awareness about the non-chemical addiction to gambling (ludomania), its dangerous consequences, and the available ways to get qualified help.

150 students from various college groups, including 1PO-12, 1SIB-2, 1B-8, 1ST-9, 1A-4, and 1ES-25, actively participated in the event.

Experts in healthcare and psychological support addressed the students: E.G. Shumenova, a Healthy Lifestyle (HLS) doctor from Polyclinic No. 4, and Nursseitov Tamerlan Asanuly, a social psychologist.

During her presentation, Dr. Shumenova E.G. explained the key aspects of the issue in detail, providing a clear definition of ludomania as a serious mental disorder associated with an uncontrollable urge to gamble. Students learned about the early signs of the addiction, such as constant thoughts about gambling, increasing bets, and attempts to recover losses. Special attention was given to the catastrophic social, financial, and psychological consequences of ludomania that destroy the lives of the gambler and their family. The speaker presented practical steps and strategies on how to cope with ludomania and overcome gambling addiction, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the problem and seeking help.

During the lecture, students were also distributed special memos titled “Stop, Ludomania!”, which contained brief but crucial information on the signs of the problem and ways to address it.

The specialists stressed that ludomania is a treatable disorder and urged students who face this problem not to deal with it alone. Participants were reminded of the opportunity to receive anonymous and free psychological assistance via the Unified Psychological Support Hotline: 1406. Holding such events is a significant step in forming a psychologically healthy and responsible student environment.
